The 3DO received a slick space shooter in 1994’s Total Eclipse. While not well known today, this on-rails blaster offered fast paced action across vivid alien planets and mechanical tunnels. Developed by Crystal Dynamics, Total Eclipse leaned into the 3DO’s graphical capabilities to deliver an immersive sci-fi adventure.

Set during an alien invasion of Earth, you pilot an advanced starfighter across the cosmos to take down the hostile Drak-Sai forces. Their doomsday weapon, the Sun Dagger, threatens the entire solar system by initiating supernovas. Your mission is to destroy the Sun Dagger and save humanity from annihilation.

From the detailed 3D landscapes to the relentless pace, Total Eclipse generates the feel of a desperate space mission. Gameplay unfolds on rails as your ship automatically flies through predetermined paths. You’re free to maneuver around obstacles and blast enemies, but can’t deviate from the set course.

Stages alternate between sweeping over alien terrains and twisting mechanized tunnels. You’ll dodge mountains, gun turrets, and dangerous traps while unleashing a hail of lasers. Letting your shield reach zero brings destruction, forcing you to balance offense and evasion. Power-ups enhance weapons like searing plasma cannons for stronger firepower.

The variety of planetary settings keep the action engaging across 20 stages. Highlights include flying through hydrocarbon lakes on Saturn’s moon Titan and diving into the swirling storms of Jupiter. While gameplay is repetitive, the spectacle carries you forward to the climatic showdown.

Pushing the 3DO’s graphical limits, each new world impresses with color and smooth animation. Some visual pop-in occurs given the processing limits, but the detailed shaded polygons and textures showcase the console’s capabilities.
