Bravely Default: Flying Fairy ROM Description

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is a turn-based JRPG released on Nintendo 3DS in 2012 and later in 2014 in North America. Developed by Silicon Studio and published by Square Enix, it is the spiritual successor to the Final Fantasy series, evolving from the original intention as a sequel to Four Warriors of Light.

The story revolves around four main characters banding together to save the world after the crystals of the world become shrouded in darkness, causing nature to fall into chaos.

Characters

The game features a cast of four main characters:

  • Agnès Oblige – a maiden who serves the wind crystal, determined to purge the darkness enveloping it.
  • Tiz Arrior – our main character, a country boy who is the sole survivor after his village is swallowed by a chasm. He joins Agnès in hopes of filling that chasm and restoring his village.
  • Ringabel – a flirtatious and suave young man who remembers nothing of his past except a journal containing future events.
  • Edea Lee, the daughter of Grand Marshal Eternia, defected from the Duchy after going against their beliefs.

There is also Airy – a crystal fairy who helps guide the party and players. Many other characters appear throughout the game, all quite unique and interesting in their own ways. Everyone is given plenty of quirks to distinguish them. However, overall they are rather flat, with development but no significant change.

The banter between party members provides amusing and engaging interactions for the player but the voice acting is hit or miss at times.

Overall, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy provides a very fun and interesting cast but is slightly lacking in character development.

Gameplay

Every game should have good gameplay not to disappoint players. Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is no exception, taking the turn-based combat and adding a few interesting twists, especially the Brave and Default system.

In a turn, you can forfeit an action and defend with Default to store up Brave Points. You can then spend these points with Brave to take multiple actions in one turn. You can also Brave without points but will then have to wait out all the extra turns before you can do anything again.

SP is another type of point in the game, earned by leaving the 3DS in sleep mode for 8 hours with the game on or unnecessary microtransactions whose reason for existing I don’t understand. SP can be used to pause a battle at any time, even mid-enemy attack, so you can plan your own attack.

The game also utilizes the 3DS’s StreetPass feature, allowing players to send special moves they use in battle for other players to use. Overall, the mechanics are really great.

StreetPass is also used in the Norende village rebuilding minigame, where encountering other players helps rebuild the village faster, allowing you access to more items and equipment in a shorter amount of time.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy makes the most of all the 3DS functions, even the 3D, while many other games fail to do so.

Graphics and Music

Visually, the game is beautiful. While not photorealistic masterpieces, the graphics excel in their own stylized way.

The gorgeous watercolor backdrops make for very diverse and pleasing environments to explore for the first time. There are also some moving 3D dungeon environments. The character designs are nice and the outfits very stylish. Regular enemies are a bit monotonous but bosses look pretty epic.

I have to say I personally really liked the penultimate and final boss designs. So on the art side, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy definitely gets points from me for its really great art style.

The music is also a selling point for the game as the soundtrack remains one of my favorite game soundtracks, with its unique sound I call orchestral rock. If anyone knows the proper name for this genre beyond the Wikipedia one please let me know. But don’t just take my word for it, you’ve been hearing it throughout this video.

The soundtrack was composed by Revo and performed by his band Sound Horizon. If it sounds familiar that’s because it’s the Attack on Titan opening theme song. Imagine a whole game filled with music like that.

Every song in the game has its own atmosphere, from mystical to despairing to the most epic boss battle themes. The music is truly one of the standout features of Bravely Default: Flying Fairy and definitely an amazing soundtrack.
