Set your sights on the stars and experience the gripping space simulation game, “Starlancer.” Created by the masterminds behind the Wing Commander/Privateer series, Erin and Chris Roberts, “Starlancer” takes you to 2160. This is a time when the Eastern Alliance launches a surprise attack on the Western Coalition’s fleet, and calls for brave fighter pilots resonate across the universe.

The storyline plunges you into a galactic conflict as part of the 45th Volunteer Squadron. Here, you’ll navigate through various missions, including escort duties, fighter sweeps, interception sorties, and full-blown attacks on space stations. Plus, you’ll face the additional challenge of battling in asteroid fields.

In “Starlancer,” you have an array of 12 fighter planes to choose from, each unique in speed, agility, armor, and shield power. Your pilot rank, which can progress throughout the campaign, determines the selection of fighters and missiles at your disposal for each mission. As the game advances, so do your opportunities to control these warbirds, creating a truly dynamic gaming experience.

Your journey takes place in a detailed “virtual carrier,” where your interaction with crew members changes based on your current rank and performance. This setting adds a layer of realism and immersion, making you feel like you’re part of a larger war effort. Also, the game provides video news broadcasts that keep you updated on the war status, adding depth to the narrative.

“Starlancer” beautifully continues its narrative into Chris Roberts’ Freelancer project, though both games cater to different sub-genres. “Starlancer” maintains a laser focus on combat action, while “Freelancer” expands its universe with trading elements and freedom to explore outside of missions.

Although initially developed as a computer game, “Starlancer” also graced the Dreamcast console. While the console version streamlined some of the game’s menus and options, it preserved the heart of the game’s graphics, frame rate, and offered online play for up to eight players.
