Tokyo Bus Guide ROM Description

Embark on an exhilarating journey through the bustling streets of Tokyo, with Tokyo Bus Guide, a strategy game exclusively developed for the Sega Dreamcast. This unique simulation lets you experience the thrill and challenge of navigating Tokyo’s intricate cityscape as a bus driver.

Tokyo Bus Guide, known as Tōkyō Bus An’nai in Japan, was crafted by Fortyfive and launched on December 23, 1999. Developed in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation, the game provides players the chance to drive authentic metropolitan bus routes or Toei Bus through the heart of Tokyo.

Step into the driver’s seat of a single-decker bus, the Isuzu Cubic, and transport passengers along three meticulously replicated routes. Your mission is not only to ensure timely arrivals and departures but also to adhere to all traffic regulations. This attention to detail is reminiscent of the acclaimed Densha de Go! series. Violations deduct your Driver’s Points, with severe infringements leading to an early termination of the game.

In the main story mode, players find themselves in the role of a novice driver in training throughout September. As players progress, unlocking more routes, they also gain insights into the lives of their passengers through intriguing conversations.

Following its Dreamcast success, Tokyo Bus Guide transitioned to the arcade world in 2000, courtesy of Sega’s DC-based NAOMI hardware. This version incorporated a sit-down deluxe cabinet akin to the popular 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker. To celebrate this significant milestone, Fortyfive launched a limited-edition bundle of the Dreamcast version called Tokyo Bus Guide: Bijin Bus Guide Tenjou Pack on December 21, 2000. It included a special GD-ROM video disc featuring game hints narrated by a beautiful bus guide.

The adventure continued with a port for PlayStation 2, which came out on May 10, 2001, published by Success and aptly named Tokyo Bus Guide: Kyou Kara Kimi mo Untenshu, translating to “Starting Today, You Too Are a Driver.” The PlayStation version later had a budget re-release and even a sequel.

In Tokyo Bus Guide, adhering to traffic rules, ensuring on-time arrivals, triggering announcements, and delivering a smooth ride to passengers are essential gameplay elements. Each rule violation or incomplete task affects the green “life bar” on the screen, turning it red. However, timely departures or arrivals at stations can restore this bar. If the bar turns entirely red, it signals an early retirement for the player.

The three routes you can navigate are the Niji 01, Tian 70, and Ume 76. Each route provides a unique driving experience, be it through the vibrant Tokyo Bay area, the bustling Shinjuku ward, or a more laid-back Western Tokyo. Further routes and schedules become available as you gain more experience in Story mode.

For those seeking a challenge beyond the main game, Tokyo Bus Guide also offers a mini-game quiz on Japanese road signs that can be downloaded to the Visual Memory unit.

So, seize the opportunity to cruise through Tokyo’s streets. Download the Tokyo Bus Guide ROM for the Sega Dreamcast emulator today. And if you enjoy games like Tokyo Bus Guide, consider exploring Densha de Go!, another engaging simulation that offers a unique, immersive experience in the world of Japanese public transport.
