PokeMal: Animals & Monsters in Pokemon is an original fan creation that mashes together the Pokemon universe with the horror game genre popularized by Resident Evil. In this parallel dimension, Pokemon are not lovable pets but instead fierce competitors. Instead, they have evolved into ferocious monsters that prey on people and other Pokemon everywhere.
The player assumes the position of a trainer in this new environment, where he or she must fight off waves of PokeMal while gathering as many Pokemon as possible. There is a more action-oriented fighting system in the game where players use weapons and traps to fend against hostile monsters. Similarly, the catch-and-release system of Pokemon games has been rethought, such that players now have to weigh the costs and benefits before deciding whether or not to keep a captured Pokemon.
