Charlie's Angels ROM Description
In the realm of games based on films, “Charlie’s Angels” stands as a cautionary tale of what not to do. Released as an ‘original story’ companion to the “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” film, the game could’ve been a blockbuster. Instead, it bombs spectacularly, managing to turn even beat-’em-up gameplay—a no-fail genre—into a laborious chore.
Despite boasting a voice cast featuring Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore, the game falters at almost every juncture. Its control system is overly rudimentary, offering just a punch, kick, block, and jump for each of the three angels. The attacks are as uninspired as they are ineffective, often causing the game’s frame rate to plummet. Don’t even get us started on the plot; it’s a nonsensical mission structure that would make even the most ardent fan question their life choices.
Bugs and glitches abound, from enemies inexplicably sinking into the ground to players being stuck behind doors. The camera angles are nauseatingly bad, frequently picking the least useful viewpoint. As for the audio, it’s just as abysmal, with distorted voice tracks and unremarkable background music. And we haven’t even touched on the graphics—suffice to say, they’re a horrid affair that would embarrass even a last-gen console.
Ultimately, “Charlie’s Angels” serves as a stellar example of how a game should not be made. It’s a painful, three-to-four-hour slog that will leave you questioning the very concept of licensed games. If you’re in the mood for a beat-’em-up title that actually delivers, maybe give “Streets of Rage 4” a try. At least there, the punches feel like they land.
