Freestyle Street Soccer ROM Description

The streets are calling, but not every game can answer with finesse. Acclaim’s Freestyle Street Soccer is an earnest attempt at exploring the subculture of urban sports, targeting an audience that has largely been spoiled by EA’s juggernaut franchises like NBA and NFL Street. While the game dips its toe into the gritty, concrete jungle, it fails to captivate with authenticity or even, quite frankly, playability.

Touting itself as a street-savvy alternative to traditional soccer titles, Freestyle Street Soccer does check some ‘urban’ boxes—curse-spewing characters, baggy attire, and audacious hairstyles. However, these elements feel more like a caricature than an authentic street scene. The gameplay is a blend of soccer fundamentals and showy tricks, and yet neither feels particularly convincing. Think of a vintage FIFA 98 engine coated with a shallow layer of street lingo and you’re in the neighborhood.

The ball sticks to you as if magnetized; your CPU opponent might as well be reading a newspaper for all their defensive skills; and the goalkeeper animations are more circus act than last line of defense. You also get to choose from a variety of ‘gangs,’ each a glorified stereotype, featuring cringe-inducing dialogue that serves as a disservice to the urban culture it attempts to represent.

Tournaments and gameplay modes offer some respite, but even they fail to save this title from its almost predestined mediocrity. Add to this an inconsistent graphical execution between the Xbox and GameCube versions and you’re left with a game that seems like a missed opportunity more than anything else. The redeeming factor, if it can be called that, is a somewhat enjoyable soundtrack featuring artists like Queens of the Stone Age and Method Man.

To sum it up, if EA’s Street series is a wall mural, Freestyle Street Soccer is doodles on a bathroom stall. For a more satisfying retro gaming experience, why not take a spin with “Super Mario Sunshine” on ROMsdl.NET? At least there, jumping around in outlandish ways is part of the charm.
