Driving the streets, the layout captures the skewwed sense of place the series is known for. Exploring the nooks of this sprawling map and discovering hidden gags induces serious nostalgia. The game’s missions, dialogue, and self-referential humor are completely in line with the show, making players feel like they’re playing through a lost season of the series.

Like Grand Theft Auto, gameplay revolves around completing outrageous missions within an open world. As each Simpson, players race against the clock to pull off absurd tasks like destroying Buzz Cola shipments before Professor Frink’s Truckasaurus goes on a rampage. The cel-shaded graphics, while dated today, do a decent job approximating the 2D look of the series. However, utilizing actual cell shading would have better captured The Simpsons’ visual style. The 3D models give characters and objects unrealistic depth and shading that detracts from the flat minimalism of the animation. Similarly, the uncompressed audio makes the game feel detached from the compressed sound of the show. But the stellar voice acting, authentic music, and hilarious writing sell the experience regardless.

Though not without flaws, The Simpsons: Hit & Run comes closer than any other game to letting fans live out their Springfield fantasies. It squeezed an entire city into consoles and told an original story worthy of an episode.
