Thrust into a cyber-quest for powerful data called “virtua souls,” Sei finds himself ensnared in a plot against a mysterious organization with nefarious goals. It sounds electrifying, but gameplay issues — notably unresponsive controls and a stubborn camera — sap the thrill, rendering the platforming segments tedious.
Let’s talk combat. The fighting system should be the main course here, especially with Virtua Fighter cameos to pepper the action. But alas, your opponents are lethargic, and the fights feel lackluster. Earn a “virtua soul,” and you’re armed with a special move that turns the remainder of your encounters into a cakewalk. What should have been the game’s pièce de résistance, given Virtua Fighter’s reputation for complex mechanics, ends up making fights as challenging as popping bubble wrap.
Add to this an underwhelming visual palette, lackluster audio, and uninspiring voice acting, and “Virtua Quest” turns out to be a ‘must-miss’ rather than a ‘must-play.’ If you’re a Virtua Fighter enthusiast, keep your cravings satiated with the original series; this spin-off lacks the punch you’re accustomed to.
