Nintendo console gothic action has been typified by the Castlevania series since 1986. Players step into the shoes of vampire hunters battling Count Dracula and his goons in Konami’s dark fantasy universe. The series, which featured severe 2D platforming over terrifying Transylvanian landscapes, came to be associated with Nintendo difficulty.
Simon Belmont’s fabled Vampire Killer whip, subweapons like holy water and daggers, and well-known enemies like Medusa, Frankenstein’s monster, and the Grim Reaper were all introduced in the first Castlevania for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Open world exploration was included in Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, its non-linear sequel.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, released in 1997, was the pinnacle of later entries that refined the formula. Highlights of subsequent franchises were influenced by its “Metroidvania” style of sidescrolling action and RPG exploration.
