“Rampage 2: Universal Tour” immerses players in a frenetic universe of monsters fighting aliens. In 1999, Avalanche Software and Midway Home Entertainment released the third Rampage game after 1997’s “Rampage World Tour.”
“Rampage 2: Universal Tour” has a compelling, chaotic narrative. Inspiration from King Kong and Godzilla inspired the capture and presentation of iconic monsters George, Lizzie, and Ralph in major towns worldwide. Three new monsters—Boris the rhinoceros, Curtis the mouse, and Ruby, the lobster—born from another Scumlabs incident change the story.
Players explore continents to save the original three, suffering destruction. Simple yet addictive: shatter buildings, consume persons, and wreck automobiles to create a competitive atmosphere. Once liberated, George, Lizzie, and Ralph join the monster lineup, adding to the excitement. When aliens attack Earth, our monster heroes become its unlikely saviors. Players fight aliens around the Solar System and on their home planet in a dramatic finale.
“Rampage 2: Universal Tour” is a smart mix of action and strategy. New cityscapes await destruction in each level, with recognizable landmarks adding reality to the illusion. Mini-games provide depth by offering extra lives and powers. The PlayStation version has full-motion video cutscenes and diverse music for each level, unlike the Nintendo 64 version, which had a uniform musical theme.
