Mario Kart Wii ROM Description
Graphics
Mario Kart Wii is not the Wii’s most aesthetically pleasing game, but the graphics are still at a plausible level. Each of the 32 race courses invokes different themes and motifs – from the cool action-packed atmosphere of DK Summit to the warm, pleasing vibe of Daisy Circuit. And let’s not forget about the 16 retro courses that are included, which veteran Mario Kart players will especially love.
Textures and in-game models have been refined for the Wii but still retain their overall look from when they first appeared in previous Mario Kart games.
Audio
The sound and music complement the graphics to create a high-energy yet kid-friendly kart racing game.
Gameplay
The aim of the game is simple – race 3 laps around the course or to the end against your opponents and come out on top. Drive into item blocks along the way and use randomly selected items to gain the upper edge of the race, such as mushrooms for speed boosts, green and red shells to fire at other racers, and the inevitable blue shell that acts like a foaming missile that always blasts the racer currently in first place.
Making an appearance after its debut in New Super Mario Bros, the new Mega Mushroom is fun to use. The other two new items however don’t seem to catch on since they’re impossible to avoid and at least one other racer will be caught in their effects. The Thundercloud that works like hot potato gets annoying and the POW Block works too similarly to the Lightning item – that must be why the POW Block isn’t in any other Mario Kart games!
As neat features that change the racing experience, players can now perform tricks for speed boosts and even race on bikes. As much fun as I enjoyed racing on bikes, I have come to realize that they don’t give you a good mini turbo boost after drifting as karts do. Plus, performing wheelies takes a lot of control away from the player until the front wheels are set back down.
You can play with one of four control options. My personal favorite is the new Wii Wheel option – not only is it precise when turning and drifting, but it also feels good in your hands and adds realism to racing. Of course you can play with just the Wii Remote but it has far less feel and realism. For players who prefer a more traditional style, the game can also be played with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, the Classic Controller, or the GameCube controller.
All these control options open the doors for all kinds of gamers to join in, even on the multiplayer fun. Local multiplayer modes support up to 4 players and online up to 2 players per console for a total of 12 players from anywhere in the world. Despite using the same tedious friend code exchange system, Mario Kart Wii’s online is the best online in any Wii game ever. It has no lag, it’s very smooth, and it’s easy to find a party to race in, even after the Wii’s long reign.
