Capcom Fighting Evolution combines classic characters across Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, and more for crossover 2D battles. Select from a roster representing five franchises, each with its unique playstyle and mechanics faithfully adapted. While the fusion shows promise, limited content and omitted fighters undermine the experience.
The mashup lets you answer age-old rivalry questions by pitting Ryu against Dimitri or Ken against Morrigan. Each character plays authentically with their signature moves and abilities. Custom combos and super meters also draw directly from the respective games. Efforts were made to balance the cast, though SF2 and Alpha fighters still tend to have advantages.
Tag team matches allow swapping between rounds to mix up tactics. But lacking standard tag mechanics, it feels tacked on. Arcade only lasts six fights, ending on underwhelming notes. No bonus modes aside from training and gallery unlockables leave little solo content.
The gameplay foundation shows potential for veterans. But the roster omits icons like Chun Li and Talbain, with only 20 cutting. Sprites feel inconsistently updated, and stages lack flair. For a game simply reusing assets, the limited selection disappoints.
Bringing its classic series together should be an ideal crossover for Capcom. But Evolution executes the idea haphazardly, leaving it as wasted potential. Hardcore Capcom fans will enjoy seeing their favorite universes collide briefly. But shallow content and missing characters undermine the experience.
