Assassin’s Creed II ROM Description

Picking up where Assassin’s Creed left off, Assassin’s Creed 2 continues to follow Desmond Miles. The evil, control-hungry Templars are trying to weed through his DNA to locate an all-powerful artifact known as a Piece of Eden. Luckily for Desmond, Lucy, a Templar assistant from the last game, reveals herself fully as a mole and rescues him, bringing him to an assassin safehouse. Here Lucy reveals that they must beat the Templars to the Pieces of Eden and therefore must immerse him once more in an Animus and into another of his ancestors’ histories, this time Ezio Auditore da Firenze from the Renaissance era of Italy.

Graphics and Audio

As you move through Ezio’s life, you’ll be awed by how massive a world Ubisoft has created, eliminating the tired and tedious traveling on horseback from town to town. Ezio can fast travel to the cities you need to explore, but in that vein Ubisoft has made the cities much more expansive and with far more numerous sections. On top of this, as someone fortunate enough to study in Italy and see many of these structures firsthand, I can attest to how much painstaking detail must have gone into the level design, making this one of the most breathtaking games I’ve ever seen. On top of the great graphics, the soundtrack, sound effects, and voice acting for AC2 are all exquisite, from violins setting the mood as you climb the Duomo in Florence, to the clang of rusted swords striking one another. I can’t stress enough how tremendous the peripherals for this game were.

Gameplay

Along with the great detail in the game’s look and sound, the feel of the gameplay has been improved drastically since the first Assassin’s Creed. Ezio still has his ancestor’s Prince of Persia-like wall-climbing abilities, but the new combat system is much more fluid, allowing you to improvise much more than in AC1, from throwing sand in the enemy’s eyes to ripping his weapon out and using it against him. The new combat system is much less a button masher and more a free-flowing expression of pain. Along with this, the game has you befriend the great inventor Leonardo da Vinci, whose help becomes vital to completing your mission, as well as giving you new and advanced weapons like poison-tipped blades and a miniature wrist-mounted firearm.

Replay Value

The only downside many feel for Assassin’s Creed 2 is the replay value. Once you make your way through the 20-25 hour single player mode, although there are plenty of collectibles to come back for, they aren’t critical to the story. So unless you get them your first time through or are addicted to 100% completion, they aren’t much of a draw.

Conclusion

Despite the lack of replay value, Assassin’s Creed 2 is still a top-of-the-line story while fixing many of the combat problems gamers had with the first game. If you are addicted to great plot and third-person combat like I am, Assassin’s Creed 2 is a must-have for anyone’s collection.
