BioShock Infinite ROM Description

With news surrounding this game’s troubled development, some began to wonder if this game would ever see the light of day. Now it’s finally here – the question is, does it live up to the hype? BioShock Infinite stars Booker DeWitt, who is tasked with rescuing a teenage girl named Elizabeth as payment for a debt he owes. He has to venture to the city of Columbia to rescue her. Columbia is a floating city, starkly contrasting to Rapture, the underwater city from the previous BioShocks.

Story and Setting

The first time you set foot in Columbia, it’s a breathtaking experience. The vibrant color palette is a huge departure from most shooters, which all use a brown color palette and look the same. Additionally, the city’s sheer scale is mind-boggling, with tall buildings, lively atmosphere, and nothing to see but sky all around you.

The scale means that on the console version, the framerate takes an occasional drop, but it’s nothing to hinder the overall enjoyment. Also, including the aerial skylines provides a further way to enjoy the scenery. The setting and characters add to the authentic feel, paired with the atmosphere, to bring the world to life.

Visuals and Audio

The copy used in this review was the Xbox version, and it looks impressive for a console title, but you do begin to get the impression that the consoles are being pushed to their limits. Some of the textures aren’t quite as sharp as their PC counterparts, but the overall visual feel is still stunning.

The soundtrack adds emotional depth to the game and is well thought out – it fits the setting and complements various chapters throughout.

Gameplay

BioShock Infinite feels like a traditional shooter at the start – you only have access to guns and then later acquire the skyhook, which opens up melee possibilities. This is where the conventional side ends. Controls are tight and familiar for shooter fans, except when you press the left trigger expecting to aim down sights and unleash one of your Vigors instead. Vigors are superpowers that allow you to dispatch enemies uniquely and are this game’s equivalent of Plasmids.

Vigors add a new dynamic to gameplay because they allow you to turn the tide on battles when they aren’t going your way. Multiple enemies can be dealt with at once. Another unique combat element comes in the form of aerial skylines. Skylines feel amazing and are fast-paced. Enemies can follow you onto them so you can have high-speed battles while flying through the air.

AI Companion

After meeting Elizabeth, she becomes your AI companion and goes a long way to prove AI isn’t always useless. She offers combat support takes care of herself, and her ability to open tears means she can provide aid and protection. She is instrumental, and for once, I never need to think, “Is Elizabeth okay?” An AI that can care for herself and me is worth having around.

Conclusion

This is a solid game for diehard BioShock fans, and Elizabeth makes it a must-buy. For anyone new to the series, this is a welcome entry point – an engaging story and likable characters make this one of the best games in PS3.
