Get ready for explosive Hong Kong action with Dead to Rights: Reckoning. This PSP prequel brings back supercop Jack Slate for another round of bullet-dodging mayhem. While sloppy controls hold it back, Reckoning captures the over-the-top spirit of classic action flicks for some guilty pleasure fun.
Jack must rescue a kidnapped girl from various gangs, diving in slow motion and unleashing lethal disarms along the way. His trusty dog Shadow also joins the fray, instantly taking down foes when called into action. The premise oozes machismo appeal, putting players in the shoes of an ’80s movie hero.
Unfortunately, executing all the cinematic flair proves a chore. The imprecise nub and disruptive camera make moving and targeting a constant struggle. First-person perspective when near walls is disorienting mid-combat. Disarming moves look awesome but leave Jack open to ambushes. Run out of ammo, and you’re forced to charge unarmed into gunfire.
On the bright side, gun sounds pack a satisfying punch. Detailed environments also impress, though leaping everywhere to navigate gets tiresome. Odd design choices like useless silencers further frustrate. There’s fun to be had overcoming the challenge, but expect to battle the controls as much as the bad guys.
For action junkies who can overlook clunky gameplay, Reckoning’s over-the-top style delivers. Practicing the sweet disarms and diving in slo-mo to dodge bullets can feel empowering once mastered.
