Gran Turismo ROM Description

After several years of delays, speculation and name changes, Gran Turismo for PSP has finally been released. Although it may lack the ultra-high definition graphics that we’ve become accustomed to, the game still renders at 60 frames per second. GT PSP continues the series’ renowned driving mechanics, sans vehicle damage physics. With a collection of over 800 cars, 5 tracks and 60 variations, the game still doesn’t provide the full experience we know and love. Signature details that define the franchise are missing here: from engine tuning, parts customization to an in-depth career mode. This PSP racing game can handle a maximum of 4 cars on track at once – a limitation that makes it easy to score a podium finish, where you can rake in a huge cash bonus.

The idea of the game is simple – race a few laps on all the tracks (since they’re unlocked from the start), collect prize money and go shopping at the dealerships. It sounds good but because the game uses a random system, when you enter a dealership, you only get to choose between random car manufacturers. So if you’re hoping for a specific brand, tough luck, you have to wait until that manufacturer randomly appears before you can buy the car you’ve always wanted. Hopefully by then you still have enough in-game money to purchase it.

The garage share feature is misleading, where you can trade or share cars with other players via connectivity. Rare and expensive cars are usually traded, but you have to trade one of your own cars in return. The share feature makes a copy of the car for your friend, but the problem is it analyzes your whole garage, finds cars your friend doesn’t have and copies them all at once, giving that lazy bum all your hard work.

The game also has multiplayer mode for up to 4 players, with different skill levels between players. The more skilled player gets handicapped with slower cars and poorer starting positions. But there is still no online play, which disappoints many. However, there are rumors of a free PS3 downloadable version that allows online play.

The AI in multiplayer mode can be improved as you increase your skills on the tracks. You’ll get better AI opponents as well as improve automated driving for yourself over time. This is useful when you need a break during multiplayer races. But you can’t play with friends in championship or time trial modes, making the game a bit dull once the prize money rolls into your account.

Despite the lack of unlockables, end game rewards system and absence of a career mode, fans and collectors will still appreciate the iconic racing experience with its driving simulation. Interestingly, you can import your PSP garage into GT5 when it’s released next year, as well as save money by downloading the digital version.
