Descend into hellish carnage with Final Doom, the 1996 add-on that delivered two intense new episodes for the legendary Doom franchise. Packed with unrelenting action, diabolical levels and sinister soundtrack, it pushed the limits of the classic FPS formula to new levels of white-knuckle intensity.
As a standalone product or expansion for Doom II, Final Doom was developed by TeamTNT using id Software’s editing tools. It contains two separate 32-level megawatts: TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment. While TNT was an official commission, Plutonia originated from veteran designers outside id and is considered one of the most ruthlessly challenging Doom entries.
The thin storylines continue Doom’s planet-hopping crusade against demonic forces. But Final Doom is all about over-the-top action through hellish environments. Hordes of unholy monsters like Cacodemons and Revenants assail from all sides, flooding each level with nonstop threats. A devastating arsenal of shotguns, chainguns, rocket launchers, and more keeps the combat thrilling and savage.
Nearly identical to Doom II in terms of gameplay and presentation, Final Doom shines in its diabolic level design. Devious traps, ambushes, and set-pieces push the player to their limits. Learning each labyrinthine map and using every advantage is essential to survive the onslaught. Secret areas reward exploration, providing health, weapons, and power-ups for the trials ahead. The pounding metal soundtrack drives the hellish atmosphere home.
While more limited than the PC version, the PlayStation port gracefully captured the essence of Doom for console gamers. Some content cuts were necessary but the adrenaline-fueled core stayed intact. For those seeking maximum challenge, Final Doom delivered some of the most intense Doom experiences yet.
