Gran Turismo 2 is not only the best racing simulation game of all time but also one of the best games ever made. And it was a huge success when it sold over 9 million copies, making this masterpiece the third best-selling game on the PS1 and completely deserving of it. This is a game that everyone needs to play, even if you prefer Mario Kart or Need for Speed, this game is worthy of any game collection.

Arcade Mode is a great way to get familiar with this game if you have never played a simulation before. However, to unlock all the tracks, you have to get a driver’s license in Simulation Mode, otherwise you will be limited to just 4 tracks. I feel that is the wrong approach and the next game in this series will luckily get rid of this approach.

You are given a diverse set of car choices and can even unlock additional cars by finishing first in the races. The track selection is arguably the best I have ever seen in any racing simulation and there are nearly 30 of them, really putting most racing games at the time to shame. I would argue that there isn’t a single bad track in this game, with one exception that I will get to later.

Simulation Mode is really the main part of Gran Turismo 2. You start with $10,000 to buy a used car. There are so many different cars to start with, out of the total 650 cars in the game, very impressive for a PS1 game. Before you can participate in most races, you need to do driver’s license tests, a controversial part of the Gran Turismo series. Personally I don’t mind them and I think they are much easier than most newcomers claim.

After completing all that, it’s time to start racing and there are so many races in this game, from races with compact cars, muscle cars, country races. You name it. This game offers so much content that it can put some PS2 games to shame with its sheer amount of content. You even have endurance races lasting up to two hours, and while I’m personally not a fan of these races, they do provide large amounts of prize money and rare prize cars so eventually they are worth doing even if your butt cheeks have gone numb by the end of a race.

If there is one thing Gran Turismo 2 excels at, it is presentation and aesthetics.

The North American version of Gran Turismo 2 features mostly 90s alt-rock tracks and a bit of electronica as well. While it is pretty good, there are only about six different songs and each song repeats during races until the race is over instead of cycling when the song ends.

The background music on the other hand is perfect. Each car dealership comes with its own unique theme and they all fit the mood perfectly. The rest of the background music is all amazing as well. The Gran Turismo series in general has some of the best background music of any video game series and this entry is no exception.

While the licensed soundtracks in North America and Europe may be average, the Japanese version comes with its own original soundtrack consisting mostly of progressive rock, jazz fusion instrumentals. Although it still loops until the end of the race, I think it is better than the rest of the world.
