A-Men: A Strategy and Patience Test for Hardcore Gamers

Polish developer Bloober Team created tactical 2D puzzle game “A-Men” for “hardcore gamers.” The PlayStation Vita game modernizes the character-swapping puzzle genre. Despite its humorous appearance, the game has 40 tough environmental riddles with four background situations.

The basic gameplay of “A-Men” is creating traps to destroy opposing A-Droids and get all controllable characters to the escape helicopter. Five characters can be controlled in the game: a private with rifle fire, an engineer who acts like a Lemmings builder, a commando with a grappling hook, a muscleman who can change the surroundings, and a spy who can disguise himself as an opponent.

This game tests players’ knowledge of each character’s powers. Managing a larger group of characters against a higher kill count poses hard environmental issues in later levels. Most players will be happy to survive, but a high score and S rank need strategic genius and speedy stage completion.

No doubt, “A-Men” has its issues. If a character dies, the team loses—one-hit kills make the game very cruel. Each save costs more and requires points from killing A-Droids. Some enemy A-Droids can use elevators and escape traps, while others are simply outsmarted.

The game’s controls combine touch screen and buttons, with the rear touch pad centering the camera on characters. However, changing touch screen and button input placements might cause unintended skill picks and quick death, making this method irritating.

Trial-and-error gameplay can ruin the fun of level completion. Games without difficulty levels, character health bars, or mid-level save points are generally tedious. The lack of multiplayer, which may have increased competition, is also felt.

Over 20 hours of difficult gameplay are promised in “A-Men” for £11.99. The audio, incorporating military march songs, complements the gameplay, but the 2D visual design, while excellent, has performance concerns in later stages.

Finally, “A-Men” is for strategic players that appreciate planning and studying levels. The game balances satisfaction from mastering its hurdles and irritation from its unforgivingness. It’s great for patient players who can handle its trial-and-error approach and changing controls. Blaster Team’s tactical puzzle game proves tactical puzzle games’ longevity, requiring strategy and patience.
