Attack on Titan – The game based on the popular 2013 anime has finally launched in the US. Developer Koei Tecmo brought this title to life, but did they stay true to the spirit of the anime? Let’s find out.
Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom recreates the storyline of season 1 of the anime along with parts of the manga’s content after season 1. The story focuses on Eren joining the military after his village is attacked and his mother killed by the giant Titan creatures.
Omega Force, the creators of the Dynasty Warriors series, developed this game.The game consists of 5 chapters, each lasting around 2-4 hours. There are also side missions to explore. Players control main characters like Eren, Mikasa, Armin and Levi. Eren even has a Titan form that can be used.
Each character has their own strengths and weaknesses. For example, Eren excels at solo combat and damage resistance, while Armin is weak at fighting but good at directing other characters to attack.
Like the anime, the game’s gameplay focuses on killing Titans. You’ll kill small, medium, large Titans and then abnormal long-haired, short-haired Titans… following a repetitive formula. Later chapters feature more difficult abnormal Titans but still the same formula.
The game environments are quite simple, buildings can be destroyed but all look identical. Language options are limited to Japanese subtitles only, no English. This suggests it may be a direct port of the Japanese version.
