“Ascension: Deckbuilding Game,” formerly “Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer,” is a 2010 deck-building card game. Game developer Stone Blade Entertainment (previously Gary Games) worked with professional “Magic: The Gathering” player Justin Gary. Designing with Gary were Brian Kibler, Rob Dougherty, and John Fiorillo. Playdek launched a digital version for iOS in 2011 and Windows in 2014, expanding the game’s appeal. A 2020 Kickstarter spin-off, “Ascension Tactics,” extended the game’s setting.
Since its introduction, “Ascension” has received many major additions, adding additional dimensions and strategic depth. The latest expansion, “Curse of the Golden Isles” (2021), after “Return of the Fallen” (2011), “Storm of Souls” (2011), “Immortal Heroes” (2012), “Rise of Vigil” (2013), and others. As of 2022, the digital edition lacks the “Skulls and Sails” and “Curse of the Golden Isles” additions.
Accessibility, fast-paced action, and replay value have earned “Ascension” positive reviews. As players learn the game, its flexibility to mix card factions and strategies improves fun and expertise. The video game adaption of “Ascension” was well-received for its precise translation of the card game. The game contains expansion packs and lets players play against AI or internet opponents.
Despite its great response, the video game version has been criticized. Drawbacks were the lack of a single-player campaign or story mode and the PC version’s similarity to the mobile version. The mobile game has an 84/100 Metacritic score.
