Despite a familiar plot and generic worldbuilding, the endearing party of misfits makes you care about their journey. The strategic grid-based battles also shine, requiring thoughtful positioning and ability combinations to triumph. Mix up normal attacks, magic, buffs and more to exploit enemy formations.
While story beats rarely surprise, the charming free time events and banter create an emotional bond with the group. And the Tetris-esque rubix system for boosting stats shows flashes of innovation within tired genre trappings.
Unfortunately, tedious backtracking, constant random battles, and steep grinding hamper the experience. And the presentation, while not ugly, fails to impress. But fans of old-school JRPGs should still find plenty to enjoy in Asdivine Hearts’ cozy adventuring and challenging combat tactics.
