The Assassin’s Creed Chronicles are a distinct offshoot of the main series. This trilogy of games by Climax Studios and Ubisoft has original protagonists, locations, and design decisions, including 2.5D landscapes reminiscent of classic brush paintings. The first installment, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, was released on April 21, 2015 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The following year saw the releases of Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India (January 12, 2016) and Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia (February 9, 2016). On February 9, 2016, and April 5, 2016, a compilation of all three games was released for the same platforms.

Gameplay Overview

The games in the Chronicles series are 2.5D side-scrolling platformers featuring third-person control. The goal is to make it to the finish of each linear level while avoiding hostile guards and other obstacles. Some levels have secret regions and collectibles like Animus shards, chests, and Sync points that open up new places to explore and expose new items to gather.

The gameplay focuses on stealth and fighting and includes techniques like shadow concealment and diversion creation to avoid being seen by foes. When a player is seen, alarms sound, and any surrounding adversaries will search for them until they are located or leave the area. Using mild and heavy blows, blocking strikes, and performing advanced techniques like evading gunfire or rolling over foes, the fighting system aims to degrade the enemy’s defenses in preparation for eventual execution. There are parkour-like features, however, you can only climb the highlighted colors.

A player’s final score depends on their performance throughout the level in terms of how often they made discoveries and whether or not they completed the level’s optional objectives. ‘Ranks’ from each component of the level are added together to form the final score. Chronicles: There are three potential levels in China: Shadow, for those who can sneak through without being seen, Assassin, for those who can sneak through while murdering at least one adversary, and Brawler, for those who are discovered and forced into conflict. Silencer, which is achieved by going undiscovered and employing non-lethal takedowns, has replaced Brawler as the highest level in India and Russia. Time-based rather than rank-based scoring is used for some stages. The more you know about the subject, the more you can use it.

In battle and covert circumstances, each protagonist uses a unique arsenal. In China, Shao Jun incapacitates or distracts his enemies using a jian sword, throwing knives, firecrackers, and noise-darts. The Mughal and Dravidian Hindu swords, the disguised Katar with Bagh nakh, the Chakram, the smoke bombs, and the rock pellet slingshot are only some of the weapons at Arbaaz Mir’s disposal in India. In Russia, Nikolai Orelov relies on a Berdan rifle outfitted with a bayonet for close-quarters warfare and long-range sniping and a grapnel cannon that generates lightning to disable electrical systems or kill foes near water.
