Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland—A Magical Mix of Alchemy and Adventure
“Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland” is Gust Co. Ltd.’s epic role-playing game, the eleventh in the Atelier series. Launched on PlayStation 3 in 2009, it was a Japanese best-seller and released under the “PlayStation 3 the Best” label in 2010. The game later reached North America, Europe, and Australia.
The series’ first PlayStation 3 game and the first to use 3D models instead of 2D sprites make it notable. The successful game spawned “Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland,” set five years after “Atelier Rorona.”
Japan rereleased “Atelier Rorona Plus: The Alchemist of Arland” for PlayStation 3 and Vita in 2013, followed by Western versions in 2014. In 2015, Nintendo 3DS received a remake with improved features and content.
In 2018, “Atelier Rorona DX,” a port for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Windows, expanded the game’s audience.
The four main modes of “Atelier Rorona” include field map exploration, turn-based battles, alchemy, and a visual novel-style storytelling. Players interact with locals, obtain things, and fight visible adversaries in Arland. These encounters lead to turn-based battles with physical attacks, equipment, and skills.
The game’s story spans three years and twelve three-month jobs. Failure to complete these tasks in time results in game over, forcing players to load a save. The story is complex and requires numerous plays to cover all fourteen plot threads.
Alchemist Rorona Frixell must prove her workshop’s value to the city’s economy to rescue it from closure. The postgame plot in “Atelier Rorona Plus,” involving characters from previous Atelier games, enhances this tale.
