Baboon!—A Deceptively Deep and Challenging Platformer
“Baboon!” appears to be another ‘win three medals’ challenge game, but it gradually becomes more. The game requires players to retrieve bananas that a baboon pirate’s anti-gravity ray gun has launched into the sky. Despite its simplicity, this game is surprisingly deep and intricate.
The user uses explosives to move their ape avatar from ledge to ledge, collecting bananas and reaching the ultimate goal. The bomb placement and timing dictate your leap height and direction, making the mechanics difficult. After the tutorial, the game is challenging, especially without a trajectory guidance.
Over 60 stages in “Baboon!” offer more than just bomb-propelled platforming. New platforming difficulties, physics puzzles, and bomb-changing components are added often. The new features keep the game interesting and encourage players to change their strategy.
Despite its cuteness, “Baboon!” is difficult. Steep difficulty curves can frustrate. Perseverance will yield brilliant level designs and an engrossing story. Classic 8- and 16-bit games had boss fights at the end of each themed world. Other gameplay modes include a vertical-scrolling shooter and a Breakout clone.
Finally, “Baboon!” may disappoint at first but impresses with its depth and variety. Bomb-aided platforming is renewed with new difficulties, keeping it interesting. High difficulty may stop some players from finding the game’s actual charm. “Baboon!” is a creative and fascinating title, but it takes time to comprehend its nuances.
