Double Fine’s point-and-click adventure game “Broken Age” marks Tim Schafer’s return to the genre since 1998’s “Grim Fandango.” The game, which had a deep story and innovative gameplay mechanics, was launched for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
The game “Broken Age” follows the classic point-and-click adventure structure. Players lead a character to walk, interact with things, and talk to non-player characters. Players can play Vella Tartine and Shay Volta in distinct realms. These characters can be switched at any time, although their tales don’t initially overlap. The game features context-sensitive actions and inventory-based puzzles that advance the tale.
Plot: “Broken Age” follows two seemingly unrelated youths who strive to escape their situations.
- Vella Tartine lives in a realm tormented by huge Mogs appeased by girl sacrifice. Vella, chosen for sacrifice, kills the Mog Chothra to terminate this ceremony.
- Shay Volta, a young man on the starship Bossa Nostra, feels he is being saved from a wrecked world. He realizes his missions are fake and desires independence and world truth.
Vella realizes that Mog Chothra is mechanical and manipulated by Shay, causing a cliffhanger that links their tales.
The game “Broken Age” was initially financed on Kickstarter as “Double Fine Adventure.” The initiative raised approximately $3.45 million from over 87,000 supporters, surpassing its $400,000 goal and becoming one of the most popular crowdfunded projects. 2 Player Productions recorded the game’s development.
The game has two acts, launched on January 28, 2014, and April 28, 2015. A retail version for Windows, macOS, and Linux was launched, and the Nintendo Switch version followed.
