Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc—A Mystery and Survival Tale
Spike developed and published “Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc,” the first game in the series, which was launched in Japan for the PlayStation Portable in November 2010 and eventually transferred to numerous platforms. The game blends visual novel adventure with murder investigation in Hope’s Peak Academy, an exclusive high school.
Play as high school student Makoto Naegi, who is stuck in Monokuma’s terrible game. The only way out of the school is to murder another student and avoid prosecution. The game cleverly mixes dating simulators with third-person shooters. Students work together to solve the “class trials,” where evidence-based “truth bullets” disprove claims.
Writer Kazutaka Kodaka wanted to reinvigorate adventure games with a darker storyline, which was controversial owing to its violent undertones. Its economic success and excellent response were due to Rui Komatsuzaki’s innovative gameplay and cast, especially its captivating tale and character development. It was also criticized for its easy class trials and mini-games.
The game switches between “School Life” and “Class Trials.” Players tour the school, engage with characters, and find clues in School Life. This phase includes “Daily Life” and “Deadly Life,” dating sims and investigations, respectively. In Class Trials, participants quickly analyze evidence to find the killer. The trials’ Nonstop Debate, Hangman’s Gambit, Bullet Time Battle, and Closing Argument modes provide variety to the gameplay.
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair followed “Trigger Happy Havoc” in 2012. In a PlayStation Vita compilation, “Danganronpa 12 Reload,” both games were included. An anime TV series, stage production, comics, and books were inspired by the game.
This first Danganronpa game, which combined dark storyline with new gameplay mechanics, helped define narrative-driven games in the visual novel and adventure game genres.
