Stepping into the galactic battlefield, Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours takes you on an adrenaline-fueled adventure. First released for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita as a digital download in late 2015, the game later witnessed a Windows release via Steam and made its debut in Japan in early 2016. Developer responsibilities were transferred from Pyramid to G.rev, a move announced by Degica in September 2016.

The game is a shoot ’em up video marvel, born from its initial avatar as a PSP game exclusive to Japan, and subsequently reshaped for the arcade as Dariusburst: Another Chronicle. The journey doesn’t end there as Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours incorporates an expanded version of the arcade, the Dariusburst: Another Chronicle EX, as the AC mode.

AC mode presents varied styles of gameplay to satiate the gamer in you. The Original style echoes the quintessential arcade game feel, EX spikes up the challenge, and Chronicle invites you to explore around 3,000 unique areas. The game’s ultra-wide aspect ratio offers an authentic arcade experience. Fret not if you don’t own an ultrawide monitor; it simply means you’ll enjoy the game in a narrow playing field sandwiched between black top and bottom. This aspect surprisingly enhances the arcade-like feel, especially on a PC, allowing the game to extend over multiple monitors.

The game’s Original and EX modes are reminiscent of classic Darius gameplay. You embark on one of three starting stages, battle foes with your standard weapon and burst attack, amass upgrades by vanquishing colored adversaries, and tackle a mammoth boss ship. After surviving these trials, you get to decide your next move, complete the stages, and do it all over again. Each path you choose comes with unique stages and bosses, adding a dynamic layer to the game.

The Chronicle mode stretches across planets teeming with numerous areas to liberate. Each area brings unique challenges like using distinct ships with varied weaponry or engaging in multiplayer games. It fosters a sense of community as players are grouped randomly into one of the 64 physical arcade cabinets. A striking feature is that you can unlock other areas if players on the same cabinet liberate them, uniquely promoting teamwork.

However, repetition is inevitable with around 3,000 areas in the Chronicle mode. Although the mode has a different aspect ratio that enhances screen usage and lends a homely touch, it might seem fluff if you find repetition unappealing. CS mode also houses over 200 repeating levels and bosses, but offers an opportunity to unlock new ships based on your earned scores.
