Deemo: A Moving Rhythm Game with a Story
“Deemo” is a rhythm game from Taiwanese developer Rayark that combines interesting gameplay with an emotive story. First released for iOS and Android in November 2013, it then expanded to PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 with PlayStation VR support. The game’s 3D makeover, “Deemo -REBORN-,” and PC version made it more accessible.
Gameplay: “Deemo” is a score-based music video game with three difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, and Hard. Initial levels were 1–10, but upgrades added harder levels. Autoplay option eliminates score and tree development, although players can modify note speed.
The game simulates piano playing by tapping and dragging notes to a bottom line. The game carefully distinguishes hit categories, such as “Charming” and “True Charming,” and misses, which effect the player’s score and performance. The game’s Energy mechanism makes it difficult to keep enough Energy to finish the song.
Playable Songs: “Deemo” showcases unique instrumental and vocal music from songwriters throughout geographies. Music from Earthbound Papas, guitarist Shinichi Kobayashi, and Rayark’s rhythm game “Cytus.” The partnership with Alim’s RPG “Brave Frontier” expanded its song repertoire.
The plot of “Deemo” follows Alice, a girl who enters a mysterious realm inhabited by a black entity named Deemo. Deemo plays the piano to assist Alice return to her planet, growing a tree toward a sky exit. Alice meets the “Masked Lady” and discovers the truth about Deemo and herself as she travels. At the game’s emotional peak, Deemo is revealed to be Alice’s deceased elder brother Hans. Alice wakes up from a coma at a hospital after an accident with Hans, who died to save her.
“Deemo” is a captivating rhythm game with a heartwarming tale. “Deemo” is a moving game due to its gorgeous presentation and touching story. Due to its success, “Deemo II,” a rhythm game sequel, was announced.
