Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock ROM Description

“Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock” Time and Space Navigation

The first mature video game adaptation of the renowned BBC series, “Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock,” aims to encapsulate the Doctor Who universe. Like Doctor Who, the game begins with the TARDIS spinning out of control and hitting Earth. The Doctor (Matt Smith) and River Song (Alex Kingston) must solve the crash mystery and stop a universe-threatening menace.

Smith and Kingston’s voice and motion capture boost the game’s storyline and character believability. Fans of the series recognize this level of character detail. Doctor Who-themed components like psychic paper, perception filters, and Sonic devices enhance the game.

The Doctor Who universe is vast, therefore the game’s 2D side-scrolling gameplay feels limited. The controls, designed for mobile, hinder player immersion in the interesting universe. The Doctor uses his Sonic Screwdriver to solve puzzles and pick locks, while River Song fights with her Sonic Blaster and hallucinogenic lipstick.

The 2D plane’s restrictions, especially in detecting adversary placements, hinder gameplay and cause tedious restarts. The stunningly realistic environments from three historical periods make the player want to explore further, but they can’t.

In the TARDIS, players can enjoy the Doctor’s amusing quips while using the ship’s controls. The control method mimics Sonic’s unpredictable and quirky behavior.

The screenplay of “Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock” shines, incorporating Cybermen, Daleks, Silurians, and the Silence despite its gameplay issues. Even simple tasks are improved by the series’ clever dialogue. Technical difficulties, such as late-triggering scripts and River Song’s AI faults, compromise the experience and require level restarts.

The game also struggles with puzzle complexity scaling, with Hard mode being frustrating rather than challenging. Mini-games bring diversity but detract from puzzle-solving.

Multiplayer option alleviates AI concerns in single-player but has its own obstacles. The game’s 6-8-hour length and collectibles like River’s journal pages and the Doctor’s headgear make it replayable and deep.

In conclusion, “Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock” has great promise and fan service, but technical flaws and gameplay constraints limit it. Doctor Who fans will like the game’s spirit but not its execution. Fans may enjoy its narrative and character authenticity, but the gameplay may not meet the beloved series’ expectations. Future Doctor Who games should improve technical and gameplay while building on this basis.
