Dustforce: Unique Platforming and Clean-Up Action

Hitbox Team’s platform game “Dustforce,” is unique. The platformer with a funny clean-up theme was released in January 2012 for Microsoft Windows via Steam, then for Mac OS X, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox 360.

In “Dustforce,” players control one of four janitors who clean up a dusty planet. Players must sweep up leaves and filthy critters in the game’s fifty-plus stages to proceed. Double leaping and wall jumping help the player navigate these stages. Time and completeness are used to rank performance, and some levels need near-perfect performances on previous stages.

“Dustforce” plays like fast-paced platformers like “Super Meat Boy” and “N+,” requiring rapid reactions. In a filth-corrupted society, the Dustforce janitors clean up and restore order. Four characters have slightly diverse talents, such as leap heights. Move the character acrobatically to reach the goal, cleaning up rubbish and defeating foes. Hazards force the character to restart from the latest checkpoint.

Players are rated on “finesse,” by keeping a combo meter, and “completion,” by cleaning garbage and foes. These letters-grade grades range from “D” to “A,” with “S” indicating perfect finesse or completeness. Grades of “S” in both categories unlock unique keys to further levels.

“Dustforce” has a global leaderboard and scoring system. Each patch cleaned fast boosts the combo meter, which awards points for clearing grime. This technique promotes rapid, efficient cleaning. PlayStation 3 players may store and share level replays on YouTube, while Vita and Xbox 360 players can save locally.

The game has a four-player local multiplayer mode with Survival and King of the Hill variations. Players either clean up filth or spread it on clean areas in various modes. This makes the game fun and competitive.

The level editor, available as a Windows patch and with Mac OS X, is remarkable. Players may share single-player and multiplayer maps on Hitbox Team’s website. The PlayStation and Xbox versions have 150 user-generated levels for replayability.

The unusual blend of platforming action with a cleaning-up concept makes “Dustforce” a fascinating and imaginative game. Platform games with acrobatic gameplay, competitive multiplayer options, and community-driven content are notable.
