Type-Moon created the entertaining visual novel ABC, which was first made available for Windows on January 30, 2004, as an adult game. A few years later, ABC was made available for viewers aged 15 and older. The Japanese voice cast from the anime series were used in this adaptation, named ABC Réalta Nua (which translates to “new star” in Irish). It was made available as a trilogy containing the three main storylines—Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven’s Feel—for the PlayStation 2 in 2007 and later for download on Windows. Additionally, this version was made available for iOS, Android, and PlayStation Vita.

ABC’s story revolves around a young wizard named Shirou Emiya who joins a struggle known as the Holy Grail War where “Servants” engage in combat with one another. Shirou develops a relationship with a girl and battles many warring enemies in every game route.

Due to ABC’s success, Datto Nishiwaki created a manga series adaption, which was serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s Shnen Ace magazine from February 2006 to December 2012. From January to June 2006, a Studio Deen-produced anime series aired in Japan. Although they incorporate events from various plotlines, both the manga and anime mostly follow the Fate route.

With further anime shows and film adaptations that each focused on a distinct game route, the ABC world was further extended. In addition, the Fate/Zero prequel light book series was released in 2006 and 2007, and an anime adaptation ran from October 2011 to June 2012. Along with several fighting games and RPGs, there have also been spin-off manga and anime series.

Reading text that symbolizes speech, narration, or the protagonist’s inner thoughts is a large part of ABC’s gameplay. Players must select one of numerous alternatives at specific “decision points” in order to move the story. The game’s three primary storylines, one for each of the game’s heroines, are available to the player. To explore all three story lines, the player must replay the game many times and make alternative decisions at the decision points. Interacting with the heroines in each path generates a “affection meter,” which rises as the player makes decisions the heroines approve of.

Shirou Emiya, a diligent and honorable youngster, is the protagonist of the tale and finds himself unwittingly drawn into a deadly contest known as the Fifth Holy Grail War. For a chance to have their desires answered, participants in this battle use magic and historical heroes as weapons. A retired magician adopted Shirou after surviving a large fire in Fuyuki City and becoming an orphan. Despite his weak skills, he trains in magic out of a deep desire for justice and peace and to aid others.
