The Grand Kingdom: A Tactical Adventure of Mercenary Might
Grand Kingdom, a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita tactical role-playing game by Monochrome Corporation, depicts strategy and battle from a mercenary group’s perspective. Its 2015 Japanese release and 2016 Western release encourage players to explore a world formed by the collapse of an empire through turn-based warfare on board game-like maps. Though its online multiplayer has been removed, the game’s primary experience showcases its creative concept.
Tomohiko Deguchi, a former Vanillaware employee, started game development in 2011. It looks like Grand Knights History (2011) and is very appealing. Manga creator Chizu Hashii avoids moe qualities, creating a unique graphic style accompanied by a music by Basiscape’s Mitsuhiro Kaneda and Masaharu Iwata.
Grand Kingdom players establish teams to pursue tasks for Resonail’s four warring kingdoms as mercenary commanders. Single-player missions and the now-defunct War mode are balanced. Party customization with equipment and gems adds strategy outside battle.
Navigate a chess piece-like group across a grid-patterned map to find adversaries, riches, and special events. Turn-based combat sets troops on three horizontal lanes, impacting their movement and actions. Action meters, which control mobility and attack duration, are unique. Timed assaults and button combinations deepen fights.
Up to six soldiers from one of seventeen selectable classes with distinct powers and attributes are controlled by the player. Melee, Ranged, Magic, and Special classes have strengths and limitations that affect fighting strategies.
The game takes place on Uldein-ruled Resonail. Mercenaries are building this new globe as four nations are perpetually at war. Players fight and discover the game’s story in this chaotic world.
Its gameplay and art style earned Grand Kingdom good reviews. While its audio was mixed, its narrative was mostly ignored.
Grand Kingdom is a tactical RPG featuring interesting world-building and strategic warfare. Its chess-like gameplay, multiple classes, and engaging scenario make it a remarkable genre entry. Despite the game’s online shutdown, its single-player content remains deep and intriguing for strategy fans.
