The great Swedish programmer Nicklas Nygren created this game, which debuted on PS3 and Vita in late 2012. Two playable characters, nonlinear gameplay, several endings, and many side-quests and surprises make “Knytt Underground” captivating.
This side-scrolling open action-adventure lets players explore a massive Metroidvania-style universe. The game cleverly combines Nifflas’ “Knytt” and “Within a Deep Forest.” elements. It gains climbing vertical walls and safe plummeting from any height from “Knytt,” while “Within a Deep Forest” lets it become a bouncing ball. Sprite form, where flowers grant brief power-ups, is new to “Knytt Underground”.
After humans are extinct, surviving species live in a subterranean world with human technology. Over 1,800 rooms with different graphic themes and secret spots off the map make up the game’s complicated environment. Players can travel long distances fast through “the Disorder.”
The story follows Mi Sprocket, a sprite who rings the Six Bells of Fate every six hundred years to save the world. Mi travels with two different fairies, Cilia the Moon Fairy and Dora the Sun Fairy, who affect her missions and encounters. The game regularly breaches the fourth wall, providing meta-humor and video-game cliché comments.
