Explore La-Mulana, a platform-adventure game that revives MSX classics. Ian Kelley’s English translation of Japan’s June 27, 2006 Windows release brings its beauty to another country. Remade in 16-bit format for Wii, PC, Mac, Linux, and PlayStation Vita, it offers a modern yet nostalgic experience.
Players explore La-Mulana’s mysterious tomb as whip-wielding Lemeza. Its non-linear style and network of choices to the only finale make the game appealing. Acquiring power-ups and uncovering new places is a mystery with no obvious destination.
La-Mulana takes inspiration from 1980s MSX games with a 16-color palette and resolution. ROM cartridges enable special effects on the protagonist’s laptop MSX in the game’s opening scene, a spoof of the MSX load screen.
Survival is as important as exploring in the game. Players start with a whip and minimal health and must locate objects that advance the plot or boost powers. The game’s scant life-restoring choices and trap-filled setting are more dangerous than its non-boss foes.

After his father discovers La-Mulana, the cradle of civilization, Lemeza Kosugi becomes an archaeologist. Lemeza discovers “the Mother”‘s history and her attempts to return to space, culminating to a last fight for mankind.
