“MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death,” a gripping dungeon crawler role-playing game for the PlayStation Vita, was created by Compile Heart and released by Idea Factory. The game immerses players in a distinct universe full of obstacles and sinister secrets as the second entry in the Makai Ichiban Kan series. The game’s captivating idea and gameplay mechanics have drawn notice since its December 2015 release in Japan and September 2016 release in North America and Europe.

“MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death” centers on the heroine Estra and her mission to preserve the planet in a world where the stars have stopped rotating, leaving it forever dark. In order to rewind the Celestial Screw and restart the motion of the stars, Estra, one of the four selected Makaishi (also known as the “demon machine soldier girl”), must defeat four turrets defended by Protector Gods. With characters that have distinct elemental affinities and personalities, the game explores a storyline full of fantasy and adventure.

In order to navigate the dungeons, players must first join groups of three characters (mages) and their robotic Guardians. Eventually, these groups can consist of up to four members each. Guardians’ talents, strength, defense, and health points may all be altered. Players can try out various setups as there are 10 Guardians available for selection. With “Astral Seeds,” characters are upgraded with increased stat gains and heightened monster analysis skills.

One noteworthy aspect of “MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death” is the “Dual Battle” system, which assigns a Guardian to each mage. The turn-based combat takes place in a variety of dungeons, each with special creatures, items, and traps called “Gimmicks.” The elemental structure of the game amplifies the strategic aspect by pushing players to take use of elemental advantages and disadvantages, much to the mechanisms seen in Pokémon games.

Combat is made more complex by the “Form Change” element of the game, which lets players swap between four other forms in addition to their usual form. The “Demon Stone” concept adds a level of customisation to character growth by allowing users to recall and improve certain talents.

Because “MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death” is made to accommodate a variety of play styles, players may change the dungeon’s difficulty as they go along. Furthermore, there is a fight speed setting that allows for a more dynamic and less grind-heavy gameplay experience.
