Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee HD ROM Description

While the Oddworld series is beloved by many retro gamers, the latest re-release of Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee on Nintendo Switch has left one fan questioning the purpose. As the third installment in the eccentric Oddworld franchise, Munch’s Oddysee originally launched in 2001 for the original Xbox. Since then it has seen ports to numerous systems but has aged less gracefully than other classics.

Players are reintroduced to hero Abe, who joins forces with the titular Munch, the last surviving member of the Gabbit species. With the Glukkons driving the Gabbits to near extinction and harvesting their lungs, it’s up to Abe and Munch to put an end to their nefarious schemes. Through cooperative gameplay swapping between the characters, players must outwit the Vykkers scientists and rescue imprisoned Fuzzles and Mudokons from the factory floors.

However, this fan argues that too much has changed in the years since. Controls feel sluggish and imprecise compared to modern third-person action games. Navigating cramped areas and evading enemies grows frustrating with the laggy camera control. Jumping puzzles that were challenging enough now feel downright punishing thanks to unresponsive movement. Still, the unique duo mechanic and entertaining cast of bizarre creatures keep things interesting, even if aging graphics and cutscenes distract from the charm.

I urge fans to download Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee on their PS Vita devices and run it on a compatible PS Vita emulator like Adrenaline to experience this odd adventure in a more portable form. While past its prime on modern consoles, playing on the handheld PS Vita allows appreciating Munch’s quest for what it accomplished in its time, warts and all. Fans of Abe will find plenty here to admire, even if some of the funk has faded. Overall, this grizzled gem remains a cult classic that shaped the Oddworld and deserves replay, just perhaps not at full price on the latest hardware.
