The dusty frontier world of Oddworld was home to many unsavory characters, and none so mysterious as the Stranger. A tall shadow drifting between settlements, this bounty hunter tracked dangerous outlaws across the land. But beneath his enigmatic facade, Stranger had secrets of his own. Only through capturing criminals and collecting reward money could he afford a secret operation necessary to survive some unknown affliction.
And so the Stranger’s adventures began, accepting missions from eccentric villagers to hunt savage beasts and hardened criminals terrorizing thefrontier. Combat was an unusual blend, allowing Stranger to engage foes directly while also firing a bizarre menagerie of live ammo from his crossbow. Chippunks, spiderilk webbing, and even exploding bats could be launched at enemies, providing solutions to every situation. While strange weapons kept battles entertaining, repetition became a problem as similar encounters were strung together across monotonous missions.
Fortunately, Stranger’s world was beautifully realized with charm and lore, bringing the remote frontier settlements to life. But uneven difficulty struck frustrations, with brutal bosses and convoluted endgames creating needless frustrations rather than tests of skill. Pacing too suffered as the plot dragged, only finding new energy in a climactic revelation. Still, Oddworld’s passion for crafting its universe was evident, captivating many to see Stranger’s mysterious journey to its end.
I urge fans to download Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath on their PS Vita devices and run it on a compatible PS Vita emulator like Adrenaline to experience this amusing action adventure in a more portable form. Strange and satisfying shooter gameplay paired with an engrossing frontier world make it worthy of rediscovery, warts and all.
