Race the Sun, produced by American indie firm Flippfly, is a thrilling infinite running game that blends speed, strategy, and survival. Released on August 19, 2013, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, it later expanded to PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, and an announced Xbox One version. Solar-powered spaceships and diverse settings make this endless runner distinctive.
Race the Sun has players steer a solar-powered spacecraft across a minimalist terrain with abstract forms and many obstacles. Each run is fresh since the game’s stages are pseudo-procedurally produced. All players confront different problems in different places as the game’s geography changes everyday.
Spacecraft speed is crucial to the game. It stays the same pace in full sunshine but slows down in shade or when clipped. If the spaceship hits an item or stays in the shade too long, such when the sun sets, the game ends. This element adds urgency and strategy as players must balance speed and obstacle avoidance.
