PlayStation’s High-Octane Shoot’em Up Resogun

“Resogun,” developed by Housemarque and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, is a PlayStation 4 action-shooter released in November 2013. Climax Studios released PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions in December 2014 after its popularity. “Resogun: Heroes” and “Resogun: Defenders,” downloadable DLC, offer complexity and variation to the game.

Based on vintage games like “Defender” and “Datastorm,” “Resogun” is considered Housemarque’s spiritual successor to “Super Stardust HD” and “Super Stardust Delta.”

In “Resogun,” players travel voxel-based levels, fighting waves of foes and rescuing captive humanity. The game comprises five separate levels: Acis, Ceres, Decima, Febris, and Mefitis, each with three stages and a boss encounter. Players must defeat adversaries, but saving humanity earns additional points. By beating “keepers,” individuals can be rescued from chambers and taken to safety.

In Ship Selection and Power-Ups, players can select from three ships: Nemesis, Ferox, and Phobos, each with unique agility, boost, and overdrive capabilities. Upgrades and power-ups improve “Resogun” playability. Overdrive fires a strong energy beam to destroy adversaries, while Boost lets you escape and ram enemies. A huge Nova-bomb explosion clears the level of foes. Power-ups, ship upgrades, and additional lives can be obtained via pickups or saving humans. Players can also personalize ships with user-created skins.

Bonus scores are awarded at the conclusion of each level depending on things like saved humanity and unused nova-bombs. “Resogun” has Single Level and Arcade modes. High scores on individual levels are the goal in Single Level mode, whereas Arcade Mode requires continuous level progression. The game offers Rookie to Hero difficulty settings for players of all skill levels.

Reception: “Resogun” received accolades for its fast-paced action, amazing voxel visuals, and captivating music. It was criticized for being too short and lacking lessons. Although criticized, the game received multiple accolades and was nominated for Action Game of the Year at the 2014 DICE accolades. The 2014 GDC Choice Awards confirmed its standing as a top shoot ’em up.
