A Time-Bending Shoot’Em Up Adventure: Sine Mora
“Sine Mora,” a side-scrolling shoot-em-up by Digital Reality and Grasshopper Manufacture, uses a unique time-based mechanism. The game features 2.5D shooting on a 2D plane in a 3D simulated world for Xbox 360, Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, iOS, and subsequently the Ouya. Diesel punk-themed game with anthropomorphic characters is well-received for its gameplay and graphics.
The basic gameplay of “Sine Mora” is operating an airplane along two axes and fighting adversaries. Players may upgrade their primary weapons and employ powerful secondary weapons for stronger strikes. The game emphasizes point multipliers for successive kills and grades players by elegance and completeness.
Unique to “Sine Mora” is its time-based player health system. Damage accelerates the time restriction in each stage, while defeating foes restores it. Powerups protect, enhance weapons, and add time. Players can select characters and planes with different gaming effects.
Two interconnected narratives set in separate periods make the game’s narrative complicated. The first narrative has a father seeking retribution against the Empire for murdering his son for refusing to launch a nuclear weapon on the Enkies. The second story follows the remaining Enkie survivors seeking revenge for their people’s demise. The plot takes place on Seol, a planet with an unstable crust and a Layil Empire-Enkie Kingdom battle. The game ends with a startling revelation that completes the plot.
“Sine Mora” became “Sine Mora EX,” published in 2017 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. The game was expanded to various platforms with fresh material and features.
