Acquire’s PlayStation Vita exclusive “Sumioni: Demon Arts,” promises a unique mix of action and beauty. Acquire, known for Tenchu, wanted to create a distinctive side-scrolling experience. Despite its potential, “Sumioni” disappoints.
Gameplay and Mechanics
In “Sumioni,” players control Agura, a “Inkdemon” with simple movement, jumping, and slashing controls. Ink is used to draw platforms on the Vita’s screen, creating a unique gameplay mechanic. Environmental pickups or the Vita’s back touch pad can refill this ink. By sketching designs, players can summon “Ink Gods” for help.
Although intriguing, the game’s repetitious and unimaginative level design quickly overshadows its combat and platforming mechanics. The game has 30 stages on six tracks and six endings. Although varied, the courses and opponents lack character, making the game repetitive.
Bugs in design and interface
“Sumioni” has major interface and design flaws. Menu navigation is monotonous due to frequent save prompts. More importantly, the game’s progression is aggravating. Inability to freely select stages hinders ideal ratings for deeper levels. Instead, players must restart, which gets tedious.
Visuals and Presentation
Game visuals are strong. Beautiful sceneries and monster designs make “Sumioni” stand out. These graphical qualities can’t make up for the game’s poor gameplay and design.
Verdict
“Sumioni: Demon Arts” had great potential for the Vita, but its design and lack of variety let it down. The game’s difficult gameplay and lack of growth outweigh its premise and art design. So “Sumioni” is a squandered opportunity, appealing solely to completionists or trophy hunters.
