‘Superfrog,’ a renowned 1993 Amiga scrolling 2D platform game, has been reinvented for the PlayStation Vita, bringing it to a new generation of gamers. Initially published by Team17 and subsequently by Ocean Software and GOG.com, ‘Superfrog’ blends platforming with fairy tale elements.
In the Frog Prince fairy tale, a jealous witch turns a nameless prince into a frog and sends him on a brave journey. He must rescue his princess, captured by the same witch, and return his form. Powered by a miraculous bottle of Lucozade found by the “River O’ Despair,” the prince, now ‘Superfrog,’ has abilities to fight the witch.
‘Superfrog’ has 24 hard and enjoyable levels in six thematic realms. Each level has goals like gathering money to open exits or escape circus captivity. A timer countdown and health points may be replenished by finding Lucozade bottles in the stages.
Players receive credits for collecting money, fruit, and completing levels quickly. These credits can be kept for a high score or bet in a slot machine mini-game for bonuses. Players can earn a level code to restart their trip, which is one of the mini-game’s most intriguing aspects.
‘Superfrog’ shocks players with ‘Project-F,’ a side-scrolling shoot-em-up between worlds 5 and 6, patterned after Team17’s Project-X. Final boss fight against witch in castle brings quest to a dramatic finale.
