Teslagrad, a Magnetic Puzzle-Platformer with a Rich Story
The 2.5D side-scrolling puzzle-platform game “Teslagrad,” created and published by Rain Games in 2013, is known for its innovative gameplay mechanics and fascinating story. The game brilliantly uses magnetism and electromagnetic forces to solve puzzles and proceed through the steampunk-inspired plot.
In “Teslagrad,” players explore over 100 hand-drawn areas in the Tesla Tower. Electric-based puzzles and precision platforming dominate the game, with no combat. A little child accidentally becomes involved in a historical scheme between a tyrant monarch and a technology wizard group. Upgrades and items let players discover the tower’s mysteries as they play.
Plot: In the Kingdom of Elektropia, a ruler suppresses a gang of scientific wizards in the Teslagrad Tower, located in the city center. The game’s title combines Nikola Tesla’s name and “Grad,” Slavic for city. A young orphan escapes the King’s guards and learns the tower and the conflict’s history.
Rain Games transformed “Minute Mayhem,” a casual multiplayer game, into “Teslagrad.” Unity enabled cross-platform game creation. Players and journalists liked it at independent gaming festivals. “Teslagrad” was announced for Wii U, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and others.
Initially released on Steam in December 2013, “Teslagrad” also launched on Nintendo eShop for Wii U, PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, and retail in several European countries. After reaching Japan, the game was launched on Xbox One and Android and iOS.
A sequel, “Teslagrad 2,” was released in September 2020 by Rain Games, including a remastered version of the 2013 game. The sequel was published on Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in April 2023.
“Teslagrad” distinguishes out in the puzzle-platformer genre with its electromagnetic-based gameplay, exquisite hand-drawn visuals, and deep plot set against a backdrop of political intrigue and scientific brilliance. Its popularity and success led to a sequel and growth across several platforms, confirming its legacy as a cherished independent game.
