Nihon Falcom and NIS America released the action role-playing game Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana in 2016. In Japan, the Ys video game debuted on the PlayStation Vita in July 2016, followed by localizations for the PlayStation 4, Windows, Nintendo Switch, Amazon Luna, Stadia, and PlayStation 5. Ys VIII Mobile, a condensed version, will soon be available for Android and iOS. Over half a million copies of Ys VIII had been sold by the year’s end, and 2019 will bring Ys IX: Monstrum Nox.
The main character, Adol, gets washed up on the cursed Isle of Seiren after his passenger ship is attacked and sunk by a gigantic beast. Adol and his fellow castaways must figure out how to escape the island and solve the riddle of his dreams about Dana Iclucia, a girl from the Stone Age who has some connection to the island and his destiny.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is a third-person, action-packed role-playing adventure. Players take on the role of several playable protagonists, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, as they traverse the globe in search of resources and crafting tools. There is a damage system and various abilities that cost SP to activate. Players can also use flashy skills like Flash Guard and Flash Move to block or avoid strikes.
Production of the game started in August 2014 and launched in Japan on July 21, 2016. Ys VIII was the first Ys game for PlayStation 4, and Falcom’s first PlayStation 4 project overall. Metacritic gave the game a “generally favorable” score across the board, except for Windows, where it was given a “mixed or average” score. The English localization and technical performance on Windows were both points of contention at launch, however, they were fixed in subsequent versions.
For lovers of action role-playing games, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana delivers a compelling and immersive experience, thanks to its compelling tale, dynamic battle system, and wonderfully drawn universe.
