Shadow Dancer – The Secret of Shinobi is a side-scrolling action game developed and published by Sega that was released for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console in 1989. It is the sequel to the 1987 game Shinobi, which was also developed by Sega.

After Neo Zeed, the ninja master Shinobi, and his battle ninja talents had conquered the corrupt criminal empire, they were not heard for a considerable time. However, a new danger emerged in the shape of a reptile creature that relied only on its baser predatory instincts. The enormous beast advanced very cautiously and in complete silence, and its assault was unrelenting. Those unlucky individuals who were able to survive were taken as hostages, and widespread fear spread across the streets.

Shinobi was the only one who could take more action at this point. In the face of overwhelming troops, his only allies were stealth and the ability to strike quickly. These were his weapons. Shinobi continued his fight with the help of his loyal dog, using the ninja weapons and spells he had learned.

The gameplay of Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi is quite similar to that of the home computer version of the game, and it consists of five missions, each of which has three levels. Nevertheless, there are a few key distinctions to be made between the two. For instance, in this unique title for the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive, the levels are different, and instead of defusing explosives, your objective is to rescue hostages. After completing each objective, you will face a boss, and after you defeat each monster (with the exception of the last one), you will also take part in a bonus level in which you will need to kill all of the ninja that are flying towards you.

Some of the foes are also quite distinct from one another. A few of the lizards that show up in later missions will leave behind a “lizard coin,” which may be collected and exchanged for an additional life.
