Shinobi III – Return of the Ninja Master ROM Description

Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master is a side-scrolling action game developed and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis (also known as the Sega Mega Drive) console. It is the third game in the Shinobi series and was released in Japan in 1993, in North America and Europe in 1994, and in South Korea in 1996.

Plot

This is the final game in the Genesis/Mega Drive series and the sequel to The Revenge of Shinobi. Having defeated the Neo Zeed group, Joe Musashi retires to Japan for rest and recovery. While practicing, though, he gets the impression that the Neo Zeed’s top brass are quietly reforming the group, so he heads back to take them down again.

Gameplay

It is another platformer with a side-scrolling view. Therefore, the gameplay is similar to the last one. Musashi fights with a sword and kunai (throwing knives), which he may strengthen with the help of power-ups he finds in boxes. He will also uncover ninjitsu scrolls, time bombs that go off in 5 seconds or immediately if touched, and crates full of other lives, health, kunai (5 or 20), and other goodies within those boxes. He has the same leaping and double-jumping abilities as he had in the previous game, and when double-jumping, he may unleash a barrage of kunai in all directions. While Musashi has always been able to deflect enemy projectiles after firing a kunai, in this game, he also can drop-kick foes. At the same time, in the air (after which he will bounce, allowing for connecting additional drop kicks), run and slash enemies with his sword and do wall leaps (or kabekeri). Ikazuchi (temporary invincibility), Kari (whole-screen fire attack), Fushin (higher leaps), and Mijin (supernatural healing) are the four ninjitsu that may be used in addition to the regular attacks (self-destruction that costs one life but deals significant damage to all enemies on screen).

Boss fight

There are seven rounds total, and each round has two halves with a boss at the conclusion (except for the last game, with only one final boss). Most levels are played by scrolling horizontally from left to right. However, a few may need you to scroll vertically. There are three different forced scrolling levels: horizontal (Musashi on a horse and a surfboard) and vertical (where he must keep climbing falling rocks). One segment of a round is a maze with multiple smaller parts separated by doors; entering the wrong door brings you back to a previous area. While most levels are simple (walk from left to right and reach the exit), many will have hidden goodies in less clear pathways.

Game levels

There are four different challenges in the game. The player has three lives, and three continue at the standard difficulty setting. The game encourages a variety of play styles. Extra credit is awarded for completing a stage without resorting to kunai or ninjitsu. You will unlock a new life for every 50,000 points you rack up.
