Albert Odyssey ROM Description
Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean is a captivating role-playing video game, masterfully developed by Sunsoft for the Sega Saturn platform. Originally conceived for the Super NES, it was later transitioned to the Saturn towards the end of its development. The game made its debut in Japan in August 1996, later reaching the North American shores in July 1997, courtesy of Working Designs.
Legend of Eldean is honored to be the inaugural Albert Odyssey title presented in English, marking a shift to traditional turn-based role-playing dynamics from tactical, strategy-centric gameplay. This game was fashioned as a “gaiden” or a sidestory to the original titles, brimming with unique backstories, characters, and plotlines that are separate from the previous games in the series. The North American version received a mix of reviews.
Gameplay-wise, Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean sticks to the roots of classic RPGs, featuring an overhead perspective and combat focused on menu-based character actions.
The game’s narrative sweeps you along the epic journey of Pike, a teenager who survived a monstrous onslaught as an infant, which claimed the lives of his family. Raised by a tribe of winged humanoids, the Harpies, Pike’s world is shaken when his adoptive sister falls prey to an evil mage’s curse, turning her into stone. Joining forces with Cirrus, a sentient sword embodying the spirit of one of the legendary Eldean siblings, Pike ventures out into the world in search of a cure, unraveling an insidious plot by malevolent magicians intending to instigate racial discord and resurrect the ancient deity Vlag. With the help of companions met along his journey, Pike is tasked with thwarting this looming threat.
The character roster features:
- Pike, a human reared by Harpies following the massacre of his parents’ village, wields his father’s magical sword, Cirrus.
- Eka, a vocalist Pike encounters in the town of Gigarl, who despite her guarded demeanor due to early parental loss, slowly warms up to Pike’s courage and sensitivity. She commands a diverse array of throwing weapons and potent spells.
- Leos, daughter of the esteemed priest Koras, is a monk skilled in martial arts and healing capabilities, devoted to priesthood. She accompanies Pike on his initial adventure.
- Gryzz, a dragonman, is the eldest and strongest physical combatant in the group. He has a deep bond with his sister and dual-wields katanas in battle, in addition to possessing several breath attacks. He is known as Eruda in the Japanese version.
- Amon, a somewhat extravagant birdman with an inflated ego that puts him at odds with his kin. He eventually tempers his arrogance and contributes his halberd skills to the team.
- Kia, an apprentice magician who succeeds Leos in the group for the second adventure. As the granddaughter of a renowned sorceress, she has potent attack spells at her disposal, though her carefree disposition often lands her in hot water.
