Mortal Kombat 2 ROM Description
Unveiled in 1993, Mortal Kombat II stands as a paragon of arcade fighting games, ingeniously crafted by Midway. After initially launching in arcades, the game found its way into various home systems including MS-DOS, Amiga, Game Boy, Game Gear, Sega Genesis, 32X, Sega Saturn, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and PlayStation, predominantly in Japan. The game’s migration to these platforms was facilitated by licensed versions developed by Probe Entertainment and Sculptured Software, and published by Acclaim Entertainment, with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment currently overseeing distribution.
Mortal Kombat II, the franchise’s second principal entry, is a sequel to the original Mortal Kombat from 1992. It elevates the gameplay experience while broadening the lore of Mortal Kombat, introducing more complex finishing moves, such as multiple Fatalities per character and new finishers like Babality and Friendship. The game presents several emblematic characters including Kitana, Mileena, Kung Lao, Noob Saibot, and the recurring antagonist, Shao Kahn. The game’s narrative, a continuation of the first installment, unfolds during the subsequent Mortal Kombat tournament in the mystical realm of Outworld, where representatives of Outworld and Earthrealm contend for the right to challenge the malevolent emperor, Shao Kahn.
Despite sparking controversy due to its explicit portrayal of graphic violence, Mortal Kombat II enjoyed extraordinary commercial success and was largely applauded by critics. The game scooped up numerous annual awards and frequently featured in various top listings over the years, shaping the landscape of the video game industry. It spawned a spin-off game, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, heavily influenced the 2011 soft reboot game Mortal Kombat, and gave rise to countless video game clones. It is often regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time.
Mortal Kombat II refines the gameplay of its predecessor, featuring several standard move alterations: the addition of a crouching punch, greater differentiation between low and high kicks, a more potent roundhouse kick, and quicker recovery times for attacks to facilitate combo execution. Characters returning from the previous game also acquired new special moves, some of which can be employed mid-air, offering a game pace nearly twice as fast as the original.
Like its predecessor, matches consist of rounds, with the first player to win two rounds by completely depleting their opponent’s life bar declared the victor. Upon losing, the character becomes dazed, presenting the victor with an opportunity to perform a finishing move. Mortal Kombat II deviates from its predecessor by doing away with the “Test Your Might” bonus games and point system, opting for a consecutive win tally represented by icons.
Mortal Kombat II introduced several finisher variations: multiple Fatalities, non-lethal finishing moves like Babalities (transforming the opponent into a crying infant), Friendships (a harmless interaction with the defeated opponent), and additional stage-specific Fatalities. Boss or secret characters are exempt from performing or being subjected to finishing moves.
The game’s narrative unveils Shang Tsung, the evil sorcerer, pleading with his master Shao Kahn, the supreme ruler of Outworld, to spare his life following his defeat to Liu Kang in the previous Mortal Kombat tournament. Proposing to hold the next tournament in Outworld, Tsung ensures that Earthrealm’s warriors would have to venture away from home to compete. Kahn accepts this plan, rejuvenating Tsung’s youth and martial prowess. Raiden, the thunder god and protector of Earthrealm, receives the invitation and leads his warriors into Outworld for a tournament fraught with greater peril.
